Installation Guide & Safety Protocol
01 | What You’ll Need
To ensure a secure and level installation, please gather the following tools:
- Power Drill: For driving mounting screws into wall studs or anchors.
- Screwdriver: A Phillips-head for tightening mounting plate hardware.
- Spirit Level: To ensure your fixture is perfectly horizontal.
- Stud Finder: Essential for locating wall studs to ensure secure anchoring.
- Pencil & Tape Measure: For precise marking of mounting positions.
- Wall Anchors: Required when mounting into drywall between studs.
02 | Step-by-Step Installation
- Choose Your Location Identify your desired mounting point. For wall sconces, the industry standard height is 60–66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture. Ensure proximity to a standard outlet—our plug-in cords are approximately 6 feet (1.8 meters) long for placement flexibility.
- Pro Tip: For bedside reading, position the center of the fixture at shoulder height while seated—typically 48–52 inches from the floor.
- Mark Your Mounting Points Hold the mounting plate against the surface at your chosen height. Use a pencil to mark the screw holes. Use a spirit level to confirm alignment. If mounting to a ceiling, use a stud finder to locate the joist before marking.
- Drill & Insert Anchors If marks land on a stud, drill directly. For drywall, drill holes sized for the included anchors and tap them flush with the surface.
- Important: Use anchors rated for at least twice the fixture's weight. Most UsArtHome sconces weigh 2–6 lbs; standard 15-lb drywall anchors are sufficient.
- Attach the Mounting Plate Align the plate with your holes and drive the screws until snug—do not over-tighten. For pendants, attach the ceiling canopy now, feeding the cord through before securing.
- Attach the Fixture Body Slide or hook the lamp body onto the mounted plate. For pendants, thread the cord through the canopy and knot securely before attaching the shade. Ensure all set screws are tightened before releasing the fixture.
- Route & Conceal the Cord Guide the cord toward the outlet. Use adhesive clips or raceway channels to keep the cord tidy along baseboards or door frames. Avoid running cords under rugs or across high-traffic walkways.
- Style Note: Many designers allow fabric cords to drape naturally as a vintage-inspired design detail.
- Install the Bulb & Plug In Insert a bulb that matches the fixture’s specifications (typically E26 for North America). Plug into a grounded outlet and test the switch.
- Recommended: For dimmable ambiance, pair with a smart plug or LED-rated in-line dimmer.
03 | Cord Routing Options
- Exposed Cord (Decorative Style): Best for braided fabric cords. Drape at a slight angle or use brass cord hooks for a curated, industrial look. No additional materials required.
- Concealed Cord (Clean Finish): Use adhesive clips every 8–10 inches or paintable PVC raceways to match your wall color. Ideal for minimalist or contemporary interiors.
04 | Safety Guidelines
- ⚡ Outlet Compatibility: UsArtHome plug-in fixtures are designed for standard 110–120V grounded outlets. Do not use 2-prong adapters.
- 💡 Bulb Wattage: Never exceed the maximum wattage listed on the fixture. Over-lamping creates excess heat that can damage the socket or shade.
- 🌡️ Heat & Clearance: Maintain at least 3 inches of clearance between the bulb and any fabric shade. We recommend LED bulbs for enclosed shades as they run significantly cooler.
- 🔌 Cord Care: Periodically inspect for fraying or kinks. Do not pinch cords under furniture. If a cord is damaged, contact UsArtHome support immediately for a replacement.
- 🚫 Outdoor Use: Standard fixtures are rated for indoor use only. For patios or damp locations, please browse the UsArtHome Outdoor Collection.
- 🔒 Secure Mounting: Always verify that anchors are seated and screws are tight. Periodically check that the fixture remains firmly secured to the wall.
